The Science Behind Nutritional Therapy
The Nutritional Therapy I practice uses up-to-date understandings from current biochemical and physiological scientific research and knowledge bases to promote health and wellbeing. The assessments, advice and interventions I employ in my work as a Nutritional Therapist are founded on "evidence-based" findings from current research, which means that, wherever possible, my advice reflects up-to-date scientific evidence of what has been proven to really work.
Improved nutrition and simple lifestyle based changes as approaches to healthcare have been repeatedly shown in scientific research to support the health of all the major systems in your body. After all, we are what we eat, and when we eat healthier then it is natural that we become healthier:
- Skeletal - Nutrition can support healthy bones, joints and movement.
- Muscular - The food you eat can help building mass and increase strength for better sports performance and helps optimize body composition during healthy weight loss/gain.
- Nervous - Supporting neurological health and nervous system function. May be helpful for mood, anxiety, sleep and psychotic disorders as well as mental performance and healthier cognitive ageing.
- Respiratory - Nutrition may support the health of your lungs and airways.
- Cardiovascular - Your blood, heart and blood vessels are influenced by nutrition, which may improve heart and circulatory system function.
- Digestive - Involving the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients the body will use for every aspect of health, as well as the safe removal of unwanted materials produced during digestive processes. Symptoms of digestive imbalance include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or diarrheoa, as well some systemic symptoms that have poor digestive health as a cause, may be positively influenced by diet.
- Excretory - Nutrition plays an important role in renal (kidney), bladder and colon health to ensure waste, that may otherwise become toxic to the body, are excreted properly as urine and faeces.
- Endocrine - This is all about the hormones in your body. Diet influences the way your body makes and processes these cell messengers that regulate many body activities including stress response, metabolism and reproduction.
- Immune - A healthy immune system fights infection and other agents that can cause illness and imbalance occurs when the immune system is either under- or over-responsive. Nutrition is important for promoting healthy immunity, in turn important for keeping you healthy.
- Reproductive - Nutrition may help support male and female reproductive health.
- Integumentary [skin, hair, nails] - Your body is based on what you eat so consuming the right foods and nutrients may support healthy skin, hair and nail quality which can help you to look healthy and younger.
